Fearless Perseverance

Psalm 23:4-6
“4Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff—they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live.”

I had trained for almost a year for my first ultramarathon. At the very beginning of the race, I was fortunate enough to hear a group of four men discussing how many years they had successfully completed the race that I was about to begin. I decided I’d stay near them to listen to their advice, and allow them to help shape my strategy for this trail run, as I’d never come close to completing a run of this length.

One of the guys looked at me when I told him it would be my first race and offered me this great coaching advice: he told me to walk the uphills and run the downhills. His advice, which was helpful for me in that race, is also good counsel for us all in our life with Christ. There will be great moments in our lives, but we also know there will be dark times, as stated in verse 4, Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger for you are with me. We know that during those “uphills” we have to put one foot in front of the next and keep moving, because we have a living hope that on the other side of that hill we will have an opportunity to run again.

As Christians, because of God’s presence in us, we can fearlessly persevere during the good times, and in the most challenging moments of our life and athletic competition. If we can find our comfort in Him, then as competitors and as Christians, we will always be able to fearlessly persevere no matter what obstacles are in front of us.
