Upstate New York Ministry Highlight with David Parks

Sixty coaches and their spouses from across Upstate New York attended The Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ annual marriage retreat May 6-7, 2017 at the Woodcliff Hotel and Resort in Rochester. The now Rochester-based worship team of Kimberly and Darius Kimbrough led worship, while Dan Viola along with Todd and Beverly served as the keynote speakers, leading discussions designed to address everyday challenges in the lives of coaches and their spouses. Viola has strong FCA roots and and traveled the U.S. as a comedian and Todd serves as Managing Director of LifeGate Group in Atlanta, while Beverly is a trained Gottman Educator in marriage and parenting.

Newlyweds Jacob and Becky Lees enjoyed the weekend. “Even though we have had few issues in our marriage so far, it was great to hear different ways to attack conflicts that could arise, and it gave us an opportunity to talk and think about different topics that we haven’t thought about yet. It also gave us an opportunity to meet couples who are in different parts of their marriage.

“I also know the weekend will have impact on my coaching. I try to always find ways to grow in coaching and I have done some of FCA’s 3-Dimensional coaching strategies which have helped me think about different ways to go about handling situations with my players,” said Jacob who serves as the Defensive Coordinator/Recruiting Coordinator for the University of Rochester football team.

FCA is first and foremost a coaches’ ministry, and it is our vision is to build up a nation-wide network of Christ-like coaches and spouses that are united in community and equipped to influence athletes and athletic programs across Upstate, NY. We anticipate that the weekend will have long term impact on coaches.

Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ – to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes.
