Ministry Update with Amanda Tewksbury

“And He said to the woman, Your faith has saved you; Go in peace.”Luke 7:50

Since August 2016 Central NY FCA’s Area Director Amanda Tewksbury and the Syracuse West Area Representative Shanay Bradley have had the opportunity to offer a girls basketball FCA Camps/Community Ministry program in the city of Syracuse. This Fall, they’ve called it the FCA L.I.T.E.S. program. Each letter stands for the value of love, integrity, teamwork, excellence, and serving.

“We’ve seen that there is a lack of sports opportunities for the youth girls in our city. We feel that FCA has created an environment that allows them to learn the fundamentals of basketball as well as begin or deepen a relationship with Christ” – Amanda Tewksbury

This past fall session marks the 5th time this program has been ran, running from Sept. 23rd – Oct. 28th. With the assistance of seven coach volunteers and three High School athlete volunteers, 18 girls participated in the program from grades 5th-8th. Of the 18, 17 were from the Syracuse school district and 1 from the Marcellus school district. The session was held over the course of five Saturday’s with each session focusing on a value from L.I.T.E.S and how the bible intends for us to apply it to our lives.

  • Love = John 8:2-11 (Jesus responding to the adulteress about to be stoned)
  • Integrity = Luke 7:36-50 (woman at Jesus’ feet)
  • Teamwork= Luke 5:17-26 (Paralyzed man being helped by other men to see Jesus)
  • Excellence= Luke 10:25-37 (Good Samaritan)
  • Serving= Matthew 20:20-28 (Jesus giving His life)

In addition to the values and how we are to apply it on and off the court, L.I.T.E.S strives to focus on developing a faith, a family, and the fundamentals of basketball.

“We are seeing a family of girls, with their parents and volunteers growing deeper spiritually as individuals and as a community through our FCA Syracuse Girls Basketball programs” – Amanda Tewksbury

One parent at the conclusion of the sessions stated: “It’s one of the best programs for my daughter because it helps me and my daughter to remember we are rooted in Christ.
