Teaching the next generation to be bold in their faith is a personal ministry for Mark Jones, an FCA staff member in Midcoast Maine. Through train-ing and mentorships with young student-athletes, Mark understands the importance of equipping our future leaders with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
“As someone who likes to pour into individuals and small groups, huddle leader training is the perfect setting for me to develop the spiritual maturity of our students,” says Mark. “We had our first training back in September, and it has been awesome to watch my kids start their own huddles and build momentum as leaders amongst their peers. It is truly inspirational when they take that stand for Christ and it encourages me to keep standing up alongside them as well.”
As someone who has stood in front of congregations and preached God’s word many times, Mark knows that the first steps of leadership can be scary for anyone looking to start a huddle in a school. “Leading your friends can be scary stuff, but very real life-changing stuff too,” Mark ex-plains. “Once these students get their feet wet, they start learning how to do devotionals and pray for others without getting too nervous. It becomes a skill that they can grasp tightly and grow throughout the years.”
Mark’s young huddle leaders learn to stand on scripture, which enables them to tackle any future problem that the world may throw at them. They also learn that while leading can be tough, humbling, and hard work, it is not done by a lone individual. Whenever they step out in faith, students can expect the Holy Spirit to guide them.
“I am always going to encourage students that God is constantly right there with them,” says Mark. “He will not call them to something that he hasn’t already prepared for them. He is there in every step and will be moving ahead to pave the way. That is what FCA is all about – the Lord changing our campuses and schools through empowered students and coaches. It is an investment that has richly blessed my life and the lives of others.”
Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ – to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes.
