Eddie Huezo grew up in Bronx, New York City, and was involved in organized basketball at a young age. He played throughout middle school and high school and went on to play Division 3 basketball at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York.
Along with his thriving participation in sports, Huezo also had a passion for educating others and helping those in need. He graduated from Manhattanville College in 2008 with a Bachelor’s Degree in business management and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in teaching as well. Huezo also started an organization called the Rescue Mission. His goal was to reach people in the city for Jesus Christ and to help them hear the word of God.
“Serving people out on the city streets really tugged on my heart,” says Huezo. “I wanted to love our community well, and God was faithful in providing us with resources to connect with other ministries, launch new churches, and create outreach ministries.”
Huezo went on to work with the Department of New York City Relief, an organization that serves the homeless within the city. Around 2014, he connected with an FCA staff member at a youth pastor gathering and quickly became involved in FCA.
“We were able to get an FCA huddle into the public school where I taught,” says Huezo. “And we began having meetings during lunch once a week. As athletes, I think that sports intensifies us being trained under adversity – and it makes perfect sense to tie that into the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I love being able to support my students in that way and to pass on the experiences that I have had in my own faith.”
As an FCA Area Representative, Huezo facilitates coach and player huddles at Fordham University. He is also a teacher and educates families on financial literacy with his wife, Esmeralda. The couple and their two daughters live in Bronx, New York City, where they dream big and base their lives on Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (NLT)
Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ – to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes.
