Ministry Highlight with Jake Hannon

God is on the move in Buffalo, New York. As Jake Hannon, FCA Northwest Buffalo Area Representative, puts it, “We have really seen God do amazing things through the service of our coaches this past year. It has been like night and day for our team!”

Hannon works with the Integrity Hockey League, a Christian-led hockey ministry that uses the sport of hockey to spread the Gospel in Buffalo. When he joined the area’s FCA staff, Hannon was able to help the league reform their leadership structure and tie in an important discipleship aspect for the group by using FCA Bibles and curriculum.

“We have five teams playing in the league and there has never been more interaction outside of the hockey rink,” says Hannon. “We also have a coaches huddle that is certified by FCA that each of the leaders, as well as the president and vice president of the league, all attend. This coaches huddle has been the driving force behind rallying each of the team huddles and is creating more ministry opportunities for the league. There has also been a renewed focus on the tangible expression of servanthood and getting out in the community.”

With a refreshed vision and leadership, the league has recently partnered with the Buffalo City Mission, a not-for-profit Christian organization that helps meet the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of the community. League members spend their first Saturday of the month serving alongside other volunteers, and help with donations, inventory, and other heavy or dirty jobs that get passed along to the hockey players.

As more team leaders begin to step out in faith, Hannon is excited for what God will continue to do as the coaches huddle builds and expands. “We have really realigned the heart of our hockey league,” says Hannon. “We are getting outside of our comfort zone and getting each of our members engaged in outreach mission. It all falls on the coaches of this league to keep up the challenge of spreading the Gospel, and we are definitely seeing a lot of that!”

Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ – to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes.
