When Mike Vining came on staff with FCA, there were only a handful of coaches who did ministry in the state of New Hampshire. Now, he says, the area is experiencing exciting growth.
“New Hampshire is truly reaching coaches for Christ through the work of other coaches,” says Vining. “Our Bedford huddle has bonded together and our members dig deep into each other’s lives. They meet on a weekly basis and are starting their own FCA huddles in the schools that they coach.”
Known for being one of the least religious states in the country, New Hampshire can be a tough environment for FCA staff members to break into. However, Vining is encouraged to see more and more coaches take a stand for Jesus Christ in their schools.
“I am glad to see coaches grow in both their spiritual lives and positions as influential leaders,” says Vining. “They play an integral role in the lives of athletes and we need to teach our coaches that the hearts behind the jerseys are what matter the most. They have the power to introduce young men and women to the Lord and to guide them through these next formative years of life.”
Coaches huddles are beginning to thrive in Dover, Sanford, Concord, and North Conway with more student huddles forming throughout each of the area’s schools. With a mission for Christ to transform other coaches and student-athletes, Vining is confident that the coaches huddles in New Hampshire will continue to grow and have a significant impact in the community.
“We are equipping our coaches to go out and handle the tough issues that are taking place off the field,” says Vining. “With all the choices that our youth have today that can cause even the greatest athlete to downward spiral, more coaches are understanding the importance of sharing the Gospel with students. They keep coming back to our huddles and bringing more coaches with them. God definitely has great plans here in New Hampshire.”
Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ – to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes.
