Ministry Highlight with Dan Barnes

A small nudge in the right direction can lead to great change.

When Dan Barnes of Massachusetts started encouraging a busy coach to start a coaches huddle, he had no idea how impactful his words would be.

“I started sharing with a coach the desire to plant coaches huddles throughout Central and Western Massachusetts,” says Dan. “The coach was already familiar with the huddle concept since he was the sponsor for the student-led huddle on campus. I just kept encouraging him to consider what a coaches ministry could look like in Springfield. At first, he wondered how he could possibly add more to his plate at the time, so I made sure not to press him. I simply mentioned it to him over the course of a few months. Then one day, he finally said he was going to start a huddle on campus!”

After talking with the school’s administration and getting permission to host the huddle on campus, Dan suggested a book to the coach called Inside Out Coaching and the companion Bible study guides as an introductory group study. The huddle started small with just four coaches agreeing to meet once a month. After a few months, the group grew in size and they decided to start meeting twice a month.

“Every time this coach walks into his coaches huddle, he is overwhelmed by the amount of influence in the room,” says Dan. So many kids are being touched by these coaches and it is really amazing. The group ranges from young high school coaches to college coaches to retired coaches who still have a heart for the kids and are excited to strengthen their faith in the context of sport.”

The Springfield College coaches huddle is open to any coach in the city of Springfield. Dan is eager to see the huddle grow and impact more coaches in the area for Jesus Christ. Through small acts of encouragement and nudges toward righteousness, he hopes that other coaches will begin to bring the word of God into their peer’s busy schedules.
