Last year, we began an FCA Coaches Huddle at Eastern Nazarene College. The coaches were eager to get into the Bible together and to strategize how to bring Jesus to their athletes and keep God at the center of the school. We had six to eight coaches who attended weekly and had many engaging talks about sharing the Gospel on campus throughout the year.
To start this school year, I stepped down from leading the huddle, hoping that one of the coaches would take over leadership and make it their own. I was not surprised when the baseball coach stepped up and became the leader and the FCA campus liaison. In fact, the entire group of coaches had impressed me with their desire to minister to their student-athletes from the very beginning of our time together. They were already engaged with the mission of FCA: To lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church.
What this group of coaches needed was a vehicle to help carry out their passion for serving the Lord. By forming an FCA huddle and giving them the resources and guidance to grow, these coaches became equipped and empowered to do ministry with student-athletes on their own teams. Even more exciting, some of the coaches have started an FCA Student Huddle with over sixty students on campus! What an amazing example of how FCA can function at its best – to and through the coach.
In the same way that our coaches huddle just needed the materials and fellowship to get going, countless other coaches with a heart for spreading God’s Word need the vehicle of FCA to help sharpen their leadership abilities. With a framework that’s easy to plug into a huddle or team, FCA provides the ultimate structure for coaches who are already dedicated to serving in their schools or communities. It’s awesome to see our ministry encourage coaches that are ready to model Jesus’ example to others, and I’m excited to see our staff equip and empower more coaches around the Northeast region!
Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ – to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes.
