Steps

While it seems like yesterday, it was eight short years ago when I reluctantly decided to take a step, not knowing the impact it would have on my life.

As our son Luke was beginning his journey into youth lacrosse, I committed to do whatever it took to not coach his team.  I managed to maintain this stance and opinion about this for exactly one and a half practices. Midway through the second practice, I walked out onto the field and asked the coach if I could help with anything, never realizing the impact it would have on my life.  Initially, I didn’t want to get involved or know where I would find the time to add one more thing on my plate. But, that one day I felt as though I should help.

There were many days when I have felt ill-prepared, and that somebody else could do a better job; yet when I reflect on those years, I’m so thankful that I took that small step in March of 2010.  God had prepared me for this opportunity, and He has greatly blessed my small steps of obedience. I didn’t know how much I had to give, but what’s more incredible is how much I have received by being a part of something that was so special.

You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ – Acts 20:35B

Looking back at this chapter in my life, I have wonderful memories of my years volunteering in the Spencerport Youth Lacrosse Program, and of the relationships that were developed.  I’ll never regret stepping forward that day, and am thankful for all that God has taught me during those years.

It’s hard to see things come to a close, but as one of my mentors once taught me: If things never ended, they wouldn’t be so meaningful. As my children conclude their time in this program and my time comes to a close, I am attentive to what door God might open next.  Maybe there is an opportunity that God brings across your path today that you might feel you don’t have time for, but He will bless you in incredible ways if you step out and trust Him.
